i don't have experience with drug-exposed newborns before now anyway, so i'm learning a lot. But i definitely think she's showing symptoms. And i've learned that some of the "usual" calming techniques are actually worse with D/E newborns, so hopefully i can implement some improvements.
Biggest problem is that she will NOT let us put her down. She has to be held 24/7 so far. She was in her crib maybe 5 minutes last night before waking and crying (other attempts MUCH shorter lived), and in the bouncy seat for about 15 minutes this morning, and that's it. The rest has been in my lap, arms, etc, or Alan's lap, arms, etc. Which is a real problem for sleeping as i don't want to sleep with her at this point. i'm going to send Alan out for a sleep positioner today which will maybe make her feel snugger, like she's being held. i hope! i swaddle her as tightly as i can do, but she's so small in these swaddlers i don't know if it helps.

glad to hear it went fairly well. good luck with the sleep positioner...it might help. Mine really like her "boppy" pillow better...which is like a cross between a baby beanbag chair and a pillow. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGood luck and congrats! Try buying a swaddleme that's flannel, the smallest size, then wash and dry it on hot to shrink it. That may fit her better. I don't have any experience with drug exposed babies, either, but good luck! I think the sling will be your best friend the next few days..although the wanting to be held may just be that newborns like to be held.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend the Miracle Blanket for swaddling. Highly. Joshua must be swaddled in order to sleep and I can get the best/tightest swaddle with the Miracle Blanket.

My bio-baby girl wanted to be held 24/7 as well - it could be just the way some babies are! That lasted months!!!
